How to Get Started Writing Children’s Books

If you have not written a children’s book and are looking for tips on where to start and what to do next, it starts with a desire to impress upon those young minds. Maybe you see a gap in what the children are learning today and what they need more of.

Writing and publishing children’s books has its challenges, particularly if you are new to the book publishing business. Don’t let it overwhelm you. There is hope.

You approach children’s book publishing the same way as anything else in life: research, education and role models. Who are your role models? You should have some, if you are planning on publishing children’s books.

Where do you start? Go to the place where children’s books end up, the book stores. Take a note pad and write down what you see, the titles, the look and feel of the books. As you look through the titles and read through, note your thoughts.

Whatever you decide, write it for the appropriate age group. For example if you are going to teach about animals, writing to the 0 to 3 market, you might set it up to teach the alphabet. Older ages, lets say 7, you might put it in terms of What You Will Find in the Jungle: using all of the a, b, c animals used for the younger ages, you would create the story around those animals in just a few sentences about the animal.

Every book that has ever been written hasn’t been written yet so there is still hope for you. You also may want to pay attention to the age groups. Yes, some books for young readers are meant to be read by parents to the child. Knowing your target age is important in writing and publishing books for children.

If you are looking to self publish a book, the age of your target market is critical to reaching that market.

A child of 3 years old is not reading yet. They are building a vocabulary. The components of their language starts with letters, numbers, colors, etc. They are into sound, as well.

You may want to target the 7, up to about 9 age group. They already know their letters, numbers, colors, and know how to form sentences. Yet, you don’t want it to be so complicated. It is better to mix it with illustrations in color to enhance the experience.

Getting published as a children’s book author is the same as any other author: you can self publish or look for book publishing companies who can give you the best break on production. These would be called offset printers.

Print on Demand can produce color books for children but the cost per book may price you out of the market.

Tools like the Writers Market may be a better choice for locating publishers looking for fresh ideas and creativity related to children’s books.

It is important to understand who you are in the ocean of sharks who are well-known, but if you approach it with the right commitment and effort, allowing the knowledge you gain along the way to guide you, it can be rewarding and lucrative.
